Soccer coach Bob Baptista calls Paul Sherman, “The best all-around soccer player to perform for Wheaton during my coaching tenure. Paul was a tower of strength on defense. He was that rare intimidating player who also had great skill to go with his size.” Paul played for Bob Baptista his first two seasons followed by one year for interim coach Russ Enlow in 1968 and one year for Coach Joe Bean. Wheaton soccer teams compiled a 40-5-7 record over his four seasons while winning four NCAA regional championships. Despite being a defender, coaches moved him up into the net area on corner kicks which resulted in him scoring nine career goals.

Paul was a team captain and was voted by his teammates twice as the Most Valuable Player. Among his personal honors were First Team All-Conference three times, Second Team as a freshman; First Team All-Midwest twice, Honorable Mention once; All-NCAA Midwest Tournament twice and twice its MVP and he was elected Wheaton College co-athlete of the year by the student body in 1970.
