INTRODUCTION
There is a long history of collaboration between faculty and staff and Wheaton College Athletics. Currently, faculty and staff members regularly attend competitions, have relationships with coaches and student-athletes, and seek to foster cooperation between academic life and athletic life on campus. The Intercollegiate Athletics Committee desires to formalize for all athletic teams the informal collaborative efforts that are taking place for some of the athletic teams.
AFFIRMATIONS
Faculty partners believe that varsity athletics play an integral role in the mission of our College, and that athletic participation is meaningful and valuable by meeting essential needs in the development of the whole person.
Faculty partners are faculty and staff members who are interested in furthering the integration of the student-athlete within the mission of the College.
Faculty partners can provide an additional resource in encouraging and reinforcing the ties between the athletic and academic pursuits of the student-athlete.
Faculty partners can serve as role models who connect to the student-athletes to provide support through additional counsel and advice when specific issues arise, particularly in the areas of social issues, spiritual development, and academics.
ROLE OF THE FACULTY PARTNER
The relationship between a faculty partner and team must be allowed to develop organically, according to the individuals involved. There is no prescription for how to be a faculty partner. The primary goal is for faculty members to be a presence in the lives of the team members and this can be accomplished in any number of ways.
