James Hoxworth was a offensive lineman for the Wheaton football team from 2000-03. He was a member of three CCIW Championship football teams (2000, 2002 and 2003), making three NCAA Division III Playoff appearances. In 2002, the Thunder posted a 10-2 record and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs. He was a team captain for the 2003 Wheaton squad that recorded a 12-1 record and advanced to the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals for the first time in program history.

Hoxworth was a First Team All-American selection at guard as a junior in 2002 and again in 2003, earning selection to both the Hewlett-Packard and Football Gazette All-American teams in each of those two seasons. He also was a First Team All-American selection by D3footballl.com in 2003. A three-time All-CCIW selection, he earned First Team honors in 2002 and 2003, with Second Team recognition in 2001.

Hoxworth was named a First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2003. Additionally, he was one of three finalists for the inaugural Bobby Bowden Award, presented by Fellowship of Christian Athletes in 2003.

Hoxworth also competed as a member of the Wheaton track & field program. He won three conference championships in the discus throw across the 2002, 2003 and 2004 seasons. His career best throw of 166' 9" (50.82-meters) is ranked third in the Wheaton record books.
