Thunder men's cross country team is 3rd among a national field at UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invite

Winnecone, Wis. – The Thunder cross country teams competed at the nationally competitive UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational. The Wheaton men's cross country team put together an impressive performance with a third-place finish in 47-team field that included 11 nationally-ranked teams. The Thunder women were 24th in a 43-team field that included nine nationally-ranked teams. Today's course, Lake Breeze Golf Course, will be the site of the 2011 NCAA Division III National Championships in November – also hosted by UW-Oshkosh. 

In the 8K men's race top-ranked North Central won the event with 49 points, followed by fifth-ranked Washington (Mo.) in second place with 137 points the strong surge by the Thunder with 154 points in third place – in front of nine nationally ranked opponents. Third –ranked Calvin College scored 156 points in fourth place, eighth-ranked UW-Oshkosh was fifth with 158 points, 18th-ranked University of Chicago scored 231 points in sixth place, seventh-ranked MIT scored 240 points in seventh place, 13th-ranked NYU was eighth with 246 points, UW-Platteville (ranked 21st) scored 251 in points in ninth place and 12th-ranked Augustana scored 278 points in 10th place.

Thunder head coach Scott Bradley said of impressive performance by his team, “We had a great opportunity today to compete against some of the best teams in the nation. We took advantage of that and our guys ran very hard one through seven. I was real proud of how the whole team performed; they made the most of their opportunity.”

Wheaton's strong performance was accomplished through impressive depth that saw four runners finish in the top-40 of the 400-man field. Mark Phillips (PICTURED RIGHT) finished 16th with a time of 25:30 and Jake Waterman was 18th overall in 25:33. James Waterman posted a time of 25:45 in 26th place and Parker Thompson was 36th in 25:53, while Jacob Goertz posted a time of 26:11 in 58th place. #Nate Hatton was 71st overall with a time of 26:16 and Brett Haffner was 92nd in 26:29.

Annie Shults
Washington University (Mo.) won the impressive women's field with 61 points, MIT was second with 123 points, Calvin scored 188 points in third place, St. Olaf College scored 190 points in fourth place and Ohio Northern tallied 22 points in fifth place. The Wheaton women's team was 24th with 685 points.

Annie Shults (PICTURED LEFT) was the top runner for the Thunder women in the 395-woman field as she posted a time of 23:42 in 102nd place. Jennifer Anderson was 131st with a time of 24:04 and Parker Gary ran the 6K course in 24:08. Britta Eastburg was 144th with a time of 24:12 and Meghan Zang ran for a time of 24:35 in 170th place. Hillary Topazian took 175th-place with a time of 24:41 and Emma Krieter posted a time of 25:05 in 203rd place.
