Women's tennis extends its season-opening win streak to five with a 9-0 win against Carthage

Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton Thunder women's tennis defeated Carthage 9-0 on Wednesday night to improve to 5-0 on the year and 4-0 in CCIW play. Head coach Jane Nelson said of the win against Wheaton's longtime conference rival, "I am super proud of the team. Everyone worked really hard at practice this week to be ready for this match. The effort on the court tonight was tremendous." The veteran coach concluded, "The score is not indicative of how much we had to battle to earn the win. Carthage is always a tough opponent."

Wheaton started with a 3-0 lead in tonight's match with a sweep of the Lady Reds in doubles play. The Thunder No. 1 doubles team of Katie Park and Claire Browning defeated Carthage's Max Mella and Angelica Emmanouil 9-7. The Wheaton tandem of Miranda Kay and Sara Magnuson picked up an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles versus Hannah Haeberle and Lauren Woznicki. Nicole Freeman and Emme Lindquist teamed up for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles against Carthage's Natalie Favia and Anna Spencer.

Park earned a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 win against Mella at No. 1 singles. Magnuson was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at No. 2 singles versus Emmanouil. Kay earned a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Favia at No. 3 singles and Emma Westiwck defeated Woznicki 6-2, 6-2 in their matchup at No. 4 singles. Browning was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 5 singles against Maria Salerno and Lindquist topped Spencer 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

The Thunder will host Carroll on Friday night at 6:45 p.m. during Wheaton's Homecoming activities.
