Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton women's tennis team opened its 2013-14 season on Saturday with a pair of matches. Wheaton defeated Luther College 5-4 on Saturday morning in a match at Centre Court Athletic Club in Hanover Park, Illinois. The match was moved to Centre Court due to morning thunderstorms in the Chicagoland area. Wheaton's second match of the day returned back to the Wheaton campus when the Thunder earned a 9-0 win against Edgewood College.
Luther jumped out to a 2-1 lead by taking two of the three doubles matches in this morning's contest. Wheaton responded with four singles victories.
Sarah Ray was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at number-one singles and
Julie Buursma earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at number-two singles. Freshman
Emily Jones earned her first collegiate win in a 6-2, 6-2 victory at number-three singles. Sophomore
Erika Nelson (PICTURED ABOVE) clinched the win for Wheaton by getting Wheaton's needed fifth victory in a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win at number-four singles.
Wheaton shut out the Eagles of Edgewood 9-0 as the Thunder won all three doubles matches. Ray, Buursma, Jones, Nelson, Kaiser and
Taylor Parrish each won their respective singles matches to pick up the late-evening win.
The Thunder will return to action next Saturday at UW-Whitewater.
