Wheaton volleyball team earns a 3-1 win at Illinois Wesleyan

The Wheaton volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory at CCIW foe Illinois Wesleyan (9-15/0-5 CCIW) on Wednesday night. The Thunder won the first set 25-16 and topped the Titans 25-8 in the second set. Illinois Wesleyan won the third set 27-25 and the Thunder secured the win with a 25-17 victory in the fourth and final set.

Andy DeMoss led the Thunder with 21 kills and a .450 attack percentage. Shelby Knowles tallied 14 kills with a .455 attack percentage, while Emily Buyse, Lindsay Stein (PICTURED LEFT) and Madeline Taylor each had nine kills in the match. Ashley Torok led Wheaton with a team-high 35 assists and Lauren Wilhite had 25 assists. Kelli Manning recorded 17 digs and Knowles added 13. Wheaton tallied 69 kills in the match, with a stellar .396 attack percentage and 68 assists. The Titans recorded 38 kills, with a .162 attack percentage and 35 assists.

Wheaton jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the first set and never trailed in the set on its way to the 25-16 victory. DeMoss tallied five kills in the set and Knowles recorded five. Wheaton was a decisive 25-8 victor in the second set as the Thunder started out to an 8-0 lead in the set. Knowles (PICTURED RIGHT) was Wheaton's kills leader in the set with five.

Illinois Wesleyan won the tightly contested third set 27-25. The Titans led 11-10 and then out-scored the Thunder 4-1 to take a 15-11 lead. The Titans led 21-17 when Wheaton used a 6-1 surge to take a 23-22 lead. The score was tied 25-25 when IWU registered the final two points to win the set. DeMoss led Wheaton with seven kills in the set and Manning added 10 digs.

Wheaton earned a 25-17 win in the fourth set. Wheaton led the set 9-8 when the Thunder out-scored the Titans 11-2 to take a 20-10 lead en route to the win. Knowles and DeMoss each recorded four kills in the set.

Wheaton improves to 21-8 on the season, with a 2-2 record in conference play. The Thunder will face Wartburg and Simpson on Friday in matches at Augustana College's Pumpkinbash Tournament in Rock Island.
