Wheaton volleyball opens action in day one at the Wartburg Invite

Waverly, Iowa - The Wheaton volleyball team traveled to Iowa this weekend for three matches at the Wartburg Invite. The first two of the three matches came on Friday as Wheaton faced Gustavus Adolphus and UW-Stout. Gustavus Adolphus defeated the Thunder 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-17) in the opener and UW-Stout was a 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-21) victor in the nightcap. Wheaton closes out its weekend in Iowa on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. against the host Knights of Wartburg College.

In Friday's first match against Gustavus Adolphus (2-2), the Thunder were led in kills by Chelsea Poskocil's seven. Poskocil also recorded seven digs for Wheaton. Mary Hamann tallied five kills, while Mary Patrick added four. Setter Karalyn Osborne had a team-high 11 assists, while Alaina Nino recorded eight. Osborne recorded four digs and Elle Hudepohl tallied two service aces.

UW-Stout picked up a 3-0 victory against Wheaton in the 7:00 p.m. match tonight. Poskocil and Patrick each had a team-high 10 kills in the matchup against the Blue Devils. Patrick's 10 kills came on 18 attempts with no errors as she recorded a .556 attack percentage. Osborne distributed 20 assists and Nino added nine. Poskocil had 11 digs in the match, while Sarah Sanderson and Miriam Pozdol-Niego each recorded 10. Patrick had a team-high three total blocks in the match and Pozdol Niego had two service aces.

Following tomorrow's match against Wartburg, Wheaton returns home for a big week of action inside King Arena. On Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m., Wheaton hosts No. 15 ranked Calvin University. The Thunder host the Marilyn Scribner Invitational next Friday and Saturday. Wheaton takes on Central College (Iowa) at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by Concordia University Chicago at 6:30 p.m. Next Saturday's action opens up at 10:00 a.m. as Wheaton faces Saint Mary's College (Ind.) and the Thunder close out the tournament at 3:00 p.m. against Alma College.
