Wheaton, Ill. - The Thunder women's tennis team won its first-round match of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship on Friday morning with a 5-0 victory against Baldwin-Wallace College. Wheaton will face host DePauw University on Friday morning at 10 AM (EDT) in a second round match of the tournament.
Wheaton is now 21-2 on the year, while Baldwin-Wallace ends its season with an 18-8 record.
Wheaton jumped out to a 3-0 lead with victories in the three doubles matches that opened the match. The number-one doubles pairing of
Elizabeth Worsowicz and
Sara Federschmidt picked up Wheaton's first win of the morning with an 8-0 victory. The number-three doubles team of
Sarah Ray and
Kirsten Boyer expanded Wheaton's lead to 2-0 with an 8-3 victory.
Lindsey Hallett and
Marissa Shults concluded the Wheaton sweep in doubles play with an 8-2 victory at number-two doubles.
Shults gave Wheaton its first singles victory with a 6-2 6-1 victory against Morgan Baker at number-six singles. Ray gave Wheaton its decisive fifth points with a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Emily Pelosi at number-four singles to secure the win for the Thunder.
Today's win gives head coach
Jane Nelson's program a 5-0 record all-time in NCAA Championship First Round matches. Wheaton is 7-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
