Bloomington, Ill. -- Six days after rounding out its fall home schedule with a win over Augustana College, the Thunder women's tennis team returned to action with the first of three-consecutive conference road tests. Wheaton traveled south to Illinois Wesleyan University on Friday afternoon, and the visitors extended their remarkable 35-match win streak dating back to 1994 against today's opponents with a smooth 5-2 victory. Wheaton's overall season record is now 7-2 and 5-1 in CCIW competition, while Illinois Wesleyan drops to 6-4 with a 2-4 mark in league play.
The Thunder swept the doubles matches to earn the first point of today's meeting.
Madeline Gentry and
Tatum Thurstone secured a 6-2 win in the first doubles fixture, while
Janet Kondo and
Ella Malone enjoyed a perfect 6-0 performance in their #2 matchup.
Sophie Dew and
Carly O'Leary matched Gentry and Thurstone's scoreline with a 6-2 victory of their own at the #3 position.
The Titans pulled out competitive wins at #2 singles and #5 singles to register two points in their Homecoming match, but Wheaton had too much on the day for its central Illinois host. Kondo and
Mia Luo each notched flawless double-bagel scorelines in their #4 and #6 matches, respectively, as the former earned two wins on Friday without dropping a single game. Gentry was the victor at #1 singles via a pair of 6-2 set wins. Malone then joined her senior teammate and Kondo with two personal victories on the day courtesy of a 6-4, 6-2 success at #3 singles.
The Wheaton squad will stay in the region for another match on Saturday morning, as the Thunder take on the Millikin Big Blue in Decatur in their penultimate contest of the fall semester.
