Decatur, Ill. -- Fresh off a win against the Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Friday, the Wheaton women's tennis team ventured to Decatur this morning for the second of three-straight road matches to take on the Millikin Big Blue. The Thunder defeated the Big Blue, 7-0, to claim their fifth-straight victory over today's opponents. Wheaton has won three consecutive matches to put its record at 8-2 overall and 6-1 in CCIW play. Now guaranteed to finish second in
the conference standings, the Thunder's win also confirms a first-round bye in this season's CCIW Women's Tennis Championship, which will be played on April 23-25 in the next calendar year.
The visitors were immediately awarded two points on Saturday's scoresheet by virtue of the home side being unable to field players at #5 and #6 singles. The duo of
Madeline Gentry and
Tatum Thurstone picked up a 6-0 victory in No. 1 doubles, while
Janet Kondo and
Ella Malone had a 6-1 win in No. 2 doubles to set the score at 3-0 in Wheaton's favor heading into individual play.
In the singles portion, Thurstone and Kondo earned 6-1, 6-0 wins at No. 1 singles and No. 3 singles, respectively. Meanwhile, Malone in No. 2 singles and
Sophie Dew in No. 4 singles registered perfect double bagel results to confirm the Thunder's clean sweep.
Wheaton will continue on the road next Saturday at North Park University for its final match of the fall calendar.
