Wheaton women's track and field in second overall after first day of CCIW Outdoor Championships

Wheaton, Ill. – Day one of the of the CCIW Outdoor Track and Field Championships, being held this weekend on the Wheaton College campus at McCully Stadium and Lawson Field, was rainy and cool, but the Wheaton women's team had a strong showing on their home turf. The Thunder are currently in second place, with a team score of 17 points. Elmhurst University leads the women's field after day one with 32 points.
 
Preliminaries were held for a number of women's events on Friday – the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 800 meter run, 100 meter hurdles, and 400 meter hurdles – as well as the finals for the 3,000 meter steeplechase and the 10,000 meter run.
 
In the 10,000 meter finals, the Thunder placed four runners on the podium, including the conference champion. Susannah Bennett (PICTURED ABOVE) won the conference title in the event with a time of 38:12.98. Hope Clark placed sixth in 39:01.62, Morgan Moxley finished seventh in 39:26.72, and Alyssa Mantia earned an eight-place finish with a time of 39:33.01.
 
In the steeplechase, Natalie Conrad finished in eighth place with a time of 12:12.07.
 
Additionally, four events have been completed for the women's heptathlon, and Wheaton's Abi Gum currently stands in second place with 2,336 points and three events remaining.
 
Tomorrow's forecast looks sunnier and warmer by more than 10 degrees as Wheaton prepares for day two of the conference championships. Real time results will be posted here.
