St. Anne, Ill. -- The Wheaton men's golf team took to the course in eastern Illinois for a two-day event, and ended up having a weekend to remember. After the dust settled on the eleven teams who traveled to Olivet Nazarene for Friday and Saturday's competition, the Thunder found themselves in a tie for second place overall. The team was led by
Jonah Swartz, who shot an outstanding -1 score over the course of both days to claim third overall in the individual category.
The team winners of the competition were Roosevelt University, who shot a two-day total score of 574, which was two under par for the whole course. Wheaton were ten strokes behind the hosting Tigers after Day 1 of the competition, but mounted a furious charge on Saturday to match Olivet Nazarene in second place, both teams shooting 589 from the field. Illinois Wesleyan placed fourth with a team score of 597.
The aforementioned Swartz led the team for the second competition running, but teammate
David Morton was close behind, finishing just on the other side of the par line with a +1 two-day score. This was good enough for a T-5 finish in the individual standings.
Will Bennink and
Sam Obitts also helped themselves to top 20 finishes, with the former shooting a +6 (150) and the latter registering a +7 (151).
Next up for the Thunder men's golf team is a trip to Oak Brook to compete in the Elmhurst Fall Invite on Thursday, September 23rd.
