Kansasville, Wis. -- Three days after wrapping up its two-day stay at ONU's Bill Johnson Memorial, the Wheaton men's golf team headed north across state lines to take part in the annual Midwest Region Fall Classic hosted by Benedictine University. The large event was held at Brighton Dale Links in Wisconsin and was scheduled to consist of two 18-hole rounds over the course of Friday and Saturday. But today's second round was interrupted by lightning and severe weather, so the tournament was changed to a single-round scoring format and only Friday's results were counted in the official tabulation. Five golfers competed in this weekend's Classic for Wheaton, and a strong second-day showing for the Thunder group was unfortunately erased by the weather, meaning that Wheaton had to settle for a T-15th position in the 45-team field despite being in eighth place when Saturday's play was halted.
Ryan Soe had the best score for the Thunder on Friday and earned a Top 30 finish on the sizable individual leaderboard.
The tournament was won by Nebraska Wesleyan University as it was the only squad to shoot under par in Friday's first round. Wheaton registered a combined team total of 307 (+19) in the opening round to tie for 15th place alongside St. Norbert College and Capital University. The Thunder had just started the back nine of Saturday's second portion when the Classic was paused and were collectively sitting on a mark of 156 (-4) for the day which had seen them rise up the team standings into eighth position, only three strokes out of the top five.
The rookie Soe carded a 73 (+1) in Friday's first set of 18 to tie for 27th place on the mammoth 246-player leaderboard. Soe was under par through ten holes on Saturday afternoon and had climbed up the individual standings into a tie for ninth place overall before the weather cancellation came into effect.
Wyatt Brown saw his tournament end just one shot behind Soe, as the junior earned a mark of 74 (+2) on Friday to tie for 35th.
Baylor Brogan was negatively impacted by Saturday's cancellation, as well, as the junior had bettered his first-day showing by eight strokes through ten holes this afternoon. Brogan tallied a mark of 79 (+7) in Friday's opening round.
Tannen Reed carded an 81 (+9) in the first round to enter Friday's clubhouse just two shots behind his teammate, and
Luke Pringle was in turn two strokes behind Reed on an 18-hole total of 83 (+11).
After participating in two tournaments this week, Wheaton steps away from competition for ten days and will return to the links on September 30th to take part in another event hosted by Benedictine, the Eagles' invitational in nearby West Chicago.
