Moline, Ill. - The defending CCIW Champion Thunder women's tennis team finished second this weekend at the 2018 CCIW Women's Tennis Championship. The final championship results are compiled using a combination of regular season results and the results from this weekend's championship.
Augustana finished first with 27 total points (nine regular season points and 18 championship points); followed by Wheaton with 24 points (eight regular season points and 16 championships points). Carthage placed third with 21 points (seven regular season points and 14 championship points) and North Central placed fourth with 18 points (six regular season points and 12 championship points). Elmhurst finished fifth with 14 total points (five regular season points and nine championship points) and Illinois Wesleyan placed sixth with 13 total points (four regular season points and nine championship points). Carroll was seventh with nine total points (three regular season points and six championship points, followed by eighth-place Millikin's five total points (two regular season points and three championship points) and North Park was ninth with four points (one regular season point and three championship points).
Thunder freshman
Claire Dibble, the top seed at No. 4 singles, was Wheaton's lone singles champion this weekend. She opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against North Central's Morgan House in the opening round. Dibble defeated Elmhurst's Kathryn Wheeler 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinal on Friday. On Saturday she defeated Augustana's Madeline Lombardi 6-1, 6-2 in the championship match at No. 4 singles.
Thunder senior
Sara Magnuson, the top seed at No. 2 singles was the runner-up at that flight. She was a 6-0, 6-0 victor against Millikin's Danielle Beard in the opening round. In Friday's action, Magnuson defeated Carroll's Shanna Mogden 6-0 6-0 to advance to Saturday's championship. Augustana's Annie Timm defeated Magnuson 6-4, 6-2 in the championship match.
Claire Browning, the No. 2 seed at No. 3 singles finished second in her flight. Browning topped Carroll's Lora Leach in the in opening round 6-0, 6-1. In Friday's semifinal, Browning topped Carroll's Samantha Ramsey 6-4, 6-4. North Central's Alaina Kanthaphixay defeated Browining 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 Saturday in the championship match.
Second seeded
Nicole Freeman finished second at No. 5 singles. Freeman topped Millikin's Katie Cooper 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Freeman was a 6-0, 6-2 victor against Carthage's Nia Pham on Friday in the semifinal round. Augustana's Maleeha Chowdhury defeated Freeman 6-4, 6-1 on Saturday in the championship match at No. 5 singles.
No. 5 seed
Emma Westwick placed third at No. 1 singles. She dropped a 4-6, 4-6 decision against fourth-seeded Grace Krueger of Carroll in her opening round matchup at No. 1 singles. She defeated Millikin's Morgan Bettner 8-2 in the playback bracket and earned an 8-5 victory against Carthage's Angelica Emmanouil. Westwick defeated Carroll's Grace Krueger 8-4 Saturday in the third place match.
Wheaton freshman
Bethany Hoogerheide, seeded second at No. 6 singles finished third in her flight. She earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory against North Park's McKenzie Harrison. Carthage's Ashley Woods defeated Hoogerheide 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinal on Friday. The Thunder freshman defeated Lindsey McAuliffe 8-2 in the playback bracket. Hoogerheide defeated Illinois Wesleyan's Sam Robinson 8-3 on Saturday in the third-place match.
Magnuson and Freeman, the No. 2 seed at No. 2 doubles finished second in the tournament. The duo teamed up for an 8-1 victory seventh seeded Beard and Cooper of Millikin. The Thunder team defeated the Illinois Wesleyan team of Pinheiro and Rochaz 8-1 in the semifinals. Augustana's Zeana Badawi and Annie Timm defeated Magnuson and Freeman 8-4 on Saturday in the championship match.
Wheaton's No. 3 doubles team of Westwick and Hoogerheide, the top seed in their flight finished second. The Thunder pair earned an 8-0 victory against Carroll's team of Boeck and Klenk. In Friday's semifinal the Thunder tandem topped the North Central tandem of McGraw and Smolik, 8-6. Augustana's team of Leraaen Abbott and Morgna Bullen defeated Westwick and Hoogerheide 8-4 on Saturday in the championship match.
Wheaton's No. 1 doubles team of Browning and Dibble, the No. 5 seed, placed fourth this weekend at the tournament. The pair earned an 8-0 win against the fourth-seeded tandem of Krueger and Mogdon of Carroll on Thursday. On Friday, Browning and Dibble dropped an 8-5 decision against Augustana's Caitlyn Schaffer and Madeline Lombardi in the semifinal. Browning and Dibble defeated Elmhurst's Chiara Gaudio and Ysabel Gonzaga 8-6 on Saturday in the playback bracket. North Central's team of Hannah Hougland and Alaina Kanthaphixay topped Browning and Dibble 8-1 in the third place match.
