GAME STATS Kalamazoo, Mich. – The Wheaton volleyball team (11-15) earned a 3-1 victory on Saturday at Kalamazoo College (4-22). Wheaton won the first set 25-14 and the Hornets earned a 25-12 victory in the second set. Wheaton was a 25-22 victor in the third set and closed out the match with a 25-15 victory in the decisive fourth set.
Thunder freshman
Colleen Smith led the Thunder with 14 kills. Smith had just three attacking errors and had 32 attempts for a .344 attack percentage. Freshman
Audrey Gerze had 12 kills.
Ellie Brown and
Madeline Moore each tallied seven kills and
Kelly Thornton added six kills.
Thornton led the Thunder with 22 assists and
Alecia Funk added 12. Senior Jess Bosse had 18 digs,
Colleen Smith tallied 13 digs and
Audrey Gerze contributed 12 digs for the Thunder.
Madi Goodman had a team-high 12 kills for Kalamazoo and Rachel Girard tallied 11 kills. Zoey Ammon had 28 assists for the Hornets and Maddy Wojcik had a team-high 10 digs.
Wheaton never trailed in the first set as the Thunder jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Wheaton won the set 25-14.
The Thunder led the second set 2-0, however, the Hornets responded with an 11-1 scoring run to take the lead in the set and never trailed after that point. Kalamazoo won the second set 25-12.
Kalamazoo led for the majority of the third set. The Hornets led 18-13 when the Thunder scored five-consecutive points to tie the set at 18-18. The hosts broke a 19-19 tie with two-consecutive points to take a 21-19 lead. Wheaton responded with four-consecutive points to regain the lead at 23-21.
Colleen Smith registered two kills in the key surge and
Madeline Moore had a kill. The Hornet scored a point to trim Wheaton's lead to 23-22. A kill by
Colleen Smith gave Wheaton a 24-22 lead and a Kalamazoo error accounted for the 25
th point and the 25-22 victory for the Thunder.
Kalamazoo led early in the fourth set 5-4. Wheaton responded with seven-consecutive points to give the Thunder an 11-4 lead. Wheaton never trailed after the 7-0 run as Wheaton earned the decisive 25-15 victory in the fourth set.
Wheaton hosts Carthage Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in the final home match of the 2018 season for the Thunder.
