The Thunder volleyball team splits a pair of matches in the final day of the Pacific Coast Classic

GAME STATS 1 | GAME STATS 2 Claremont, Calif. – The Wheaton Thunder volleyball team closed out its participation in the 2014 Pacific Coast Classic on Saturday with two matches on the campus of Pomona-Pitzer. Wheaton opened the day with a 3-0 victory against Chapman University and the Thunder dropped a 3-0 decision against Pomona-Pitzer. Thunder sophomore Shelby Knowles (PICTURED ABOVE) was named to the all-tournament team for her outstanding work in the season-opening tournament.
 
Thunder head Brittany Smith noted, "I was pleased with how the team responded today. With so many young players on the court, to have our offense do so well with a solid back court was great. While we struggled in our second match, the base we are building is there and the speed and power of this competition will give us a great start for this season."
 
Wheaton picked up its first win of the season in a 3-0 win against Chapman. Wheaton won the first set 25-23, the Thunder earned a 25-16 victory in the second set and Wheaton closed out the match with a 25-22 in the third and final set.

Andy DeMoss and Sara Reiskytl each collected 11 kills to lead the Thunder in the win against Chapman. Knowles tallied 10 kills in the win and freshman Emily Potts added seven kills. Freshman setter Alley Lindner distributed 18 assists and sophomore Ashley Torok added 17 assists. Samantha Hedlund tallied a team-best 13 digs and Knowles added two service aces, while freshman Brooke Haskins added four total blocks.

Pomona-Pitzer topped the Thunder in the final match of the tournament 3-0. The hosts bested Wheaton 25-19 in the first set and picked up a 25-20 win in the second set. The Sagehens closed out the match with a 25-17 win in the decisive third set.

Knowles recorded 13 kills for Wheaton in the win. Freshman Hannah Japp added six kills and contributed four total blocks. Torok recorded a team-high 15 assists and she added two service aces. Kelli Manning led the squad with 15 digs, while Knowles added 12 digs and Hedlund contributed 11 digs.  

The Thunder will return to action next weekend at the Asics Invite, hosted by Washington University-St. Louis.
