Women's track places second, men fifth at North Central First Chance Invitational

Wheaton's women's track team placed second and the men's team took fifth out of 11 teams at Friday's North Central First Chance Invitational in Naperville. The Wheaton women accumulated 126 team points, finishing only behind North Central's 207 points. North Central also won the men's team title with 264 points finishing ahead of second place Carthage's 123.

The Wheaton men's track team showed well in field events. Justin McCrary finished fourth in the long jump (19' 6.25") and fifth in the triple jump (38' 7.5"). Brendan Cole was third in the pole vault, clearing a height of 13' 11.25". Ian McGregor was fourth in the javelin throw with a toss of 149 feet, one inch.

The 4x400 meter relay team of Nils Eastburg, Luke Vance, Kyle Williams and Derek Minkus finished in second place with a time of 3:20.75, five-hundredths of a second behind first place North Central. Vance (PICTURED RIGHT) was also second in the 800-meter run, finishing in 1:52.63.  Williams placed fourth in a very tightly contested 400-meter dash with a time of 49.96 seconds.

Brett Haffner was third in the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:59.42 and Ben Dagg finished third in the 400-meter hurdles in 57.08 seconds.

The Thunder women's performance was highlighted by a resounding victory in the 4x400 meter relay. Wheaton foursome of Rachel Holzrichter, Debbie Knubley, Alexa Sharkey and Mali Langlie finished in 3:56.38, more than 10 seconds better than second place North Central. Sharkey and Holzrichter were also part of a strong team finish in the 800-meter run. Jordan Tuin (2:19.24) was able to outstride Sharkey (2:19.50) at the finish line in a 1-2 finish while Holzrichter finished fourth in 2:23.03.

Shannon McNeil continued her strong season with a first place showing in the high jump (5'6") and a second place finish in the 100-meter dash (12.79). Hannah Considine was second in the triple jump with a distance of 34'1.5". Also placing well in the field events, Hannah Velling finished third in the javelin throw iwth a distance of 106'3".

Emily Schwaller (PICTURED RIGHT) finished second in a close finish in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:01.92, less than half a second behind the winner.
