Wheaton volleyball takes three of four at Benedictine Tournament on the weekend

Cassie Murphy tallied 11 kills and five blocks in Wheaton's win over Grinnell on Friday
Naperville, Ill. - The Wheaton College volleyball team won three of four matches and took second place at the Benedictine University Tournament on Saturday. Sophomore setter Jenna McCallister was named to the all-tournament team.

The Thunder improved to 17-15 on the year. The six-team tournament was being played on the campus of North Central College due to construction at Benedictine.

The Thunder dominated their opening match on Saturday, beating Monmouth College 3-0 by scores of 25-8, 25-10, 25-9. Wheaton's offense was dominant, only making five errors for a .389 hitting percentage. Jenna McCallister led the team with nine kills and 25 assists. Ashlie Pace tallied 20 digs and Cassie Murphy collected three blocks. Brooke Monroe added eight kills.

Wheaton followed up with a 3-1 victory over host Benedictine (25-20, 26-24, 18-25, 25-22). McCallister tallied team-highs with 33 assists and 24 digs. Abby Huebner, Cassie Murphy and Hannah Velling had eight kills each.

In the first match on Friday, Coe College defeated Wheaton 3-0. The set scores were 25-14, 26-24, 25-20. Abby Huebner led the offensive attack with seven kills and two blocks. Emily Hamilton tallied 20 digs and setter Jenna McCallister compiled 27 assists.

In the second match on Friday, the Thunder got into the win column with a 3-1 win over Grinnell College by scores of  25-18, 25-18, 16-25, 25-16.  Hannah Velling had 15 kills to lead the offense, Huebner added 12 kills while Cassie Murphy scored 11 kills with five blocks. Huebner, Jamie Knoll and McCallister each totaled three blocks. McCallister finished with 24 assists and Ashlie Pace had 23 digs.

The Thunder will be the No. 5 seed in the upcoming CCIW Tournament and they will take on No. 4 seed Elmhurst College at 7:00 PM on Tuesday at Elmhurst.
