Jonah Swartz earns first-place finish as Men's Golf comes in second at Hope College Invitational

Allendale, Mich. -- One week after beginning its Spring 2025 schedule, the Wheaton men's golf team returned to the links on Friday and Saturday, traveling to Michigan to compete at Hope College's Bob Ebels Invitational alongside ten other squads. This weekend's tournament consisted of two 18-hole rounds, and the Thunder finished the event as runners-up in the 11-team field, their best showing since also coming in second at the Midwest Region Fall Classic last September. The team's strong performance was headlined by Jonah Swartz, who became Wheaton's first men's golfer to place first at a tournament since September of 2021 by tying for the top spot on this weekend's 71-player leaderboard.

Aurora University led the field after Friday's opening round with Wheaton ten strokes behind in second place, and the top two did not change after Saturday's play. The Spartans won the competition by a 14-stroke margin, and the Thunder had a comfortable ten-shot advantage over eventual third-place finishers Calvin University. Aurora and Wheaton were the only two squads to finish the weekend with a sub-600 combined team score, with the Thunder posting a 301 tally yesterday and a slightly-improved 297 today for a competition total of 598.

The senior Swartz was tied for third in the individual standings after shooting a 72 (+1) over his first 18 holes on Friday, and his even-par 71 on Saturday was enough to see him match an Aurora competitor for a tournament-best score of 143, as the two players topped the 71-golfer field. Swartz has had multiple top-five finishes in his Thunder career to date, including a runner-up showing at the aforementioned September 2021 event, but this weekend's performance marked the All-Conference golfer's first tournament win at the collegiate level.

Wyatt Brown also had an impressive outing for Wheaton, dropping his Friday mark of 76 by five strokes to a 71 (E) to tie for sixth on the solo standings with a combined tally of 147. Freddie Chan lowered his first-round total by three shots from 78 to 75 this afternoon to tie for 21st on a weekend mark of 153.

Jackson Swartz and Sam Obitts entered the clubhouse right next to each other on the leaderboard, as the former shot a two-day total of 156 and the latter carded a combined mark of 157 following the pair's round score of 80 on Saturday.

These five players accounted for Wheaton's team score this weekend, but Ryan McLain also took part in the event on an individual basis, and the freshman tallied a two-day score of 167 after improving his first-round mark by five strokes on Saturday.

After an impressive weekend out of state, the Thunder squad will return to Illinois for its next event, as Wheaton participates in Lake Forest College's Forester Spring Invite next Friday and Saturday.
