Mike Schauer named acting Director of Athletics at Wheaton

Wheaton, Ill. Wheaton College (Ill.) announced today the appointment of Mike Schauer '93 as the acting Director of Athletics at Wheaton, effective May 12 until a new national search can be organized to identify a permanent hire. Schauer will continue in his role as Head Men's Basketball Coach at Wheaton. Schauer replaces Julie Davis '91 who announced her departure as Director of Athletics in March as she takes on a new role next week in the College's Advancement Division as a Regional Director of Development for Chicago.

Schauer rejoined his Alma Mater in 2009 as Head Men's Basketball Coach and was named an Assistant Athletics Director in 2018. He was on the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball National Committee from 2018-22. He served one as the committee's Vice Chair and was Chairman of the committee in 2020-21 and 2021-22.

Schauer will report to Vice President for Student Development Dr. Paul Chelsen '91 who stated, "Mike is a talented coach, mentor, and leader. I am grateful for his willingness to accept the acting Athletics Director role after a national search did not identify a match. I am also confident that he will continue to advance the mission of the department to benefit student experience, spiritually, relationally, and athletically. I know he will effectively support the important work of our coaches' contribution to the College's whole-person mission in service of Jesus Christ."

Schauer previously served as Director of Athletics and basketball coach at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania from 2000-02. In 2008-09 he was Co-Director of Athletics and head men's basketball coach at Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts.

Mike Schauer earned his bachelor's degree in communications from Wheaton College in 1993, after a four-year career in the men's basketball program. A team captain for the basketball program in the 1992-1993 season, Schauer ranked first all-time at Wheaton in career three-point field goals made (171) and third all-time in career assists (290) at the time of his graduation. He remained at his alma mater as an assistant coach from 1993-2000.

Wheaton College Mens Basketball vs Illinois Wesleyan, NCAA Tournament (73-77) "I am excited for this opportunity both personally and professionally," Schauer said. "I am confident in this arrangement because I know the caliber of the men and women in our department.  This will require a team effort.  I am grateful to Julie Davis for her near two decades of leadership. We will miss her in Athletics, but we know Wheaton College will continue benefit from Julie's service in her new role." Schauer adds, "I am grateful for Dr. Paul Chelsen's confidence in our department. We are going to continue to pursue excellence in every area. We want our student-athletes to grow in their relationship to Jesus, we want them to have an amazing experience, and we want to win."

In 22 seasons as a head coach in men's basketball, Schauer has accumulated a career record of 365-217, with a 62.7% career winning percentage. His teams have made seven NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament appearances, advancing to the sectional round of the tournament four times, with a National Semifinal Game in 2019.
Mike Schauer and his wife Elissa, a 1993 Wheaton graduate, have three sons: Jacob, Kyle and Caleb.
