GAME STATS 2 Bloomington, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan rallied late to overcome a late Thunder rally as the Titans took a pair of games from the Thunder baseball team with a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday afternoon. The Titans scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to thwart a Thunder comeback and take game one 11-8 before cruising to an 11-2 victory in the nightcap. The Titans improved their record to 14-12 with the sweep and 7-5 in the CCIW while bringing Wheaton to 18-10 and 8-7 in the CCIW. Wheaton will continue its conference slate on Friday when the Thunder host Augustana for a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
Wheaton trailed the Titans 6-0 in game one of the doubleheader before
Clay Morrison led off the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run sparking a four-run inning. Later in the inning,
Joel Pierce had an RBI groundout to score
Matthias Haggerty which was followed by an infield single by
Brett Albaugh that included a throwing error, bringing two runs home to close the lead to 6-4.
After a shutdown inning by
Alex Hanvey, Wheaton tied the game in the top of the sixth inning on a two-out, two-run triple by
Nick Mailman. Illinois Wesleyan went back on top in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-out double, but Wheaton had the answer in the top of the eighth inning when
Ben Brittain doubled to right-center with two outs scoring two runs to give Wheaton its first lead of the day at 8-7.
The Titans took control of the game in the bottom of the eight inning with four runs on four hits, taking an 11-8 lead that would stand as the final score. Morrison had three of Wheaton's 12 hits and scored two runs. Haggerty and Brittain also had two hits with Haggerty and
Sam Reichert each scoring two runs in the game.
Illinois Wesleyan jumped out to the same lead in game two of the doubleheader, using a four-run bottom of the first inning to lead 6-0 after four innings. Wheaton would push across a run in the top of the fifth inning and Haggerty added an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning to account for Wheaton's runs but the Titans pulled away with two in the fifth and three in the eighth for the 11-2 victory.
