Wheaton baseball drops series opener 8-5 against Carthage

(PICTURED RIGHT) singled and Trey Martin wrapped a ground rule double to right center. A groundout by Johnson scored Swider but Martin would be stranded at third giving the Thunder a 5-2 lead going into the sixth inning.

Carthage tied the game with three runs before Wheaton recorded an out in the top of the sixth inning and the Red Men pushed across the go ahead run with two outs to take a 6-5 lead. The Red Men would add two more two out runs in the top of the ninth to account for the 8-5 final score.

Andrew Arenson (3-0) earned the victory on the mound for Carthage with 6.2 innings of work. Arenson allowed all five runs on ten hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Sam Wilhelms earned his fourth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning of work. Evan Rahn (4-3) gave up all eight runs on eight hits in 8.2 innings of work with three walks and eight strikeouts.
