Thunder baseball team wins two on Saturday to sweep weekend

The Wheaton baseball team concluded its three-team round-robin event at Lee Pfund Stadium on Saturday. The day opened with St. Mary's defeating Edgewood 6-4. The Thunder closed out the tournament with two games. Wheaton was a 5-4 victor against St. Mary's (Minn.) and the hosts closed out the weekend with a 9-6 victory against Edgewood.

Wheaton has won six games in a row, including three victories this weekend. Wheaton, now 10-4 on the season, is scheduled to host Benedictine University on Tuesday at Lee Pfund Stadium.

Wheaton topped St. Mary's this afternoon in a 5-4 Thunder victory as the hosts scored five runs, on 11 hits, with one error and St. Mary's plated four runs, on eight hits, with one error.

Thunder starting pitcher Michael Kaufman worked four innings, allowing two runs, on five hits, with two strikeouts and three walks. Miles Veth (2-0) picked up the victory in four innings of relief as he allowed two runs, on three hits, with four strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Peter Moran (PICTURED LEFT) earned his first save of the year, pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Moran struck out three batters.

Senior outfielder Justin Swider was 3-for-4, with a run scored in the win. Kyle Mellinger was 2-for-4, with a double and a triple. The Thunder shortstop drove in two runs and he scored twice.

Wheaton wrapped the weekend-long tournament with a 6-4 win against Edgewood. The Thunder scored nine runs in the win, on 16 hits, committing seven errors and the Eagles scored six runs, on 11 hits, with three errors.

Senior starting pitcher Trey Martin (1-1) earned the win in 8-1/3 innings of work. He allowed six runs, including two earned runs, on 11 hits, with three strikeouts and one walk. Moran worked the final 2/3 of an innings to pick up his second save of the day.

Mellinger continued his strong day, going 3-for-4, with three runs and two RBI. He collected two doubles and a triple in the win. Swider was 3-for-5 in the game, with two runs and one RBI. Swider belted a triple and a double. First baseman Michael Szalach hit 2-for-4, with two RBI and a run scored. Catcher Taylor Howe and rightfielder Johnny Peltz each hit 2-for-4. Martin helped his own cause, going 2-for-5, with two RBI and a run. Swider stole two bases for the Thunder and Peltz recorded a stolen base.
