Tucson, Ariz.- The Thunder baseball team dropped its second consecutive game on Thursday afternoon with a 13-6 loss against the Simpson College Storm. Wheaton jumped out to an early lead but a third inning grand slam by the Storm gave Simpson a lead it would not surrender. Wheaton dropped to 4-4 on the season despite outhitting the Storm 14-12. Simpson improved to 4-3 with the win. Wheaton continues its spring trip to Tucson with a 9 AM local time matchup against Bethany Lutheran College. Wheaton topped Bethany Lutheran 14-13 in ten innings on Monday.
The Thunder opened up a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when
Trey Martin scored on
John Jensen-Johnson's triple. Simpson would take the lead for good in the top of the third inning when Tyler Craig jacked a grand slam to right center that gave the Storm a 4-1 lead. Wheaton answered in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on RBI singles by Jensen-Johnson and
Jake Portugal to cut the Simpson lead to one.
Both team scored a run in the fifth inning with
Justin Swider's single plating
Josh Kimmel to once again cut the lead to one. Simpson then opened up its lead by scoring two runs in the top of the sixth and exploding for four runs, three unearned, in the top of the seventh inning. Two more Storm runs in the top of the ninth a Swider (PICTURED RIGHT) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to account for the 13-6 spread.
Jensen-Johnson was 3-4 with 3 RBIs and finished a double short of the cycle. Swider drove in two runs with 3-4 day.
Trey Martin was 2-4 and scored two runs and
Taylor Howe was also 2-4. For the second straight day, Wheaton hit into three double plays.
