Tucson, Ariz.- The Wheaton Thunder baseball team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday afternoon with a 9-1 loss to Wesleyan University in a rematch of yesterday's 6-4 Thunder victory. Wesleyan jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and never looked back en route to improving to a record of 3-1 on the season. Wheaton fell to 4-3 with the loss.
The Cardinals pushed a run across in the bottom of the first and took advantage of a pair of defensive miscues by the Thunder to take a 4-0 lead after two innings. Wheaton threatened with leadoff walks in the top of both innings but grounded into a double play both times. A leadoff triple in the home third led to another run giving Wesleyan a 5-0 edge.
Miles Veth provided four soreless innings of relief for the Thunder, stalling the Cardinal offense until the late innings of the game.
In the top of the seventh,
Kyle Mellinger's leadoff single led to an RBI single by
Taylor Howe that cut the Wesleyan lead to 5-1. The Cardinals piled on four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to push the lead up to 9-1 which would be the final score.
Wheaton grounded into three double plays on the day, managing just eight hits in the game. Peter Rantz earned the win for the Cardinals, allowing one run in seven innings of work and striking out a pair of hitters.
Kyle Mellinger and
Taylor Howe paced the Thunder offense with two hits apiece.
Wheaton will continue its schedule on Thursday when the Thunder face Simpson College at 1 PM local time.
