Wheaton, Ill.- After a week and a half away, the Wheaton Thunder men's soccer team returned to the comforts of Joe Bean Stadium and issued a dominating performance on Friday night. With a very lopsided statistical advantage, the Thunder rolled to a 3-0 victory over the Greenville College Panthers (1-4-3). Ranked No. 16 in this week's NSCAA poll, Wheaton improved to 5-2 on the season and notched their third consecutive shutout.
Wheaton outshot the Panthers 35-3 with a 13-0 advantage in shots on goal. Wheaton held an 11-3 edge in corner kicks including 9-0 in the first half.
Derek Babb was untroubled in his clean sheet performance. Greenville keeper Thomas Crown made 10 saves while allowing three goals.
The Thunder dominated the flow of play from the onset but were kept out of the net despite several threatening buildups. Finally in the 27th minute,
Adam Blackman put Wheaton on the scoreboard with a beautiful strike from 25 yards out that crossed the mouth of goal and tucked inside the left post.
Noah Anthony set up the goal with a long pass from the opposite sideline to swing play. The 1-0 lead would hold until halftime.
The front line for the Thunder set up their second goal with an impressive combo play to open up space behind the Greenville back line.
Stephen Golz worked himself open in the right side of the box and slid into the middle where brother
Jordan Golz slotted the ball into the right side of the net to make it 2-0.
Wheaton capped their performance in the final minute with goal by
Chad Musgraves (PICTURED RIGHT) that was set up by a cross from the right side by
Trevor Adams and sent across the box with a head flick by
Stephen Golz.
Wheaton now readies itself for Tuesday night's Top 25 showdown with No. 4 Loras (6-0-2) at Joe Bean Stadium (7 PM). Loras defeated Wheaton twice last season including a 2-1 victory in the National Quarterfinals that ended Wheaton's season.
