Wheaton, Ill. – Kyle Johnson of the Wheaton Thunder men's soccer team has been named as one of 42 recipients of 2022 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships for fall sports. The NCAA has selected 21 females from all three NCAA Divisions and 21 males representing fall sports. Johnson is the first Wheaton student-athlete to receive a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship since Favor Ezewuzie of the Wheaton women's track and field team received a scholarship in 2022. Johnson is the first male student-athlete since Leif Van Grinsven of the Thunder men's track and field program was a recipient in 2019.
The NCAA awards up to 126 postgraduate scholarships annually. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The one-time non-renewable scholarships of $10,000 are awarded three times a year corresponding to each sport season (fall, winter and spring). Each sports season there are 21 scholarships available for men and 21 scholarships available for women for use in an accredited graduate program.
Johnson is one of 22 NCAA Division III athletes to earn a Spring NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship this year and one of nine male Division III athletes.
Johnson is a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-Region selection, earning the award in 2023 and 2024. He scored 24 career goals and eight career assists in four seasons with the Thunder. His 2025 senior season was cut short due to injury. He helped lead Wheaton to CCIW Regular Season Championships in 2024 and 2025, serving as a team captain this fall.
Johnson is a Biochemistry & Molecular Biology major at Wheaton with a 3.88 cumulative grade point average. He is a three-time Academic All-CCIW selection in his Wheaton career. He is Co-President of Wheaton's Symbiosis Club and serves on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in the Wheaton Athletics Department.
