GAME STATS Wheaton, Ill.- The #13-Wheaton men's soccer game dropped their second straight game, allowing a goal with 37 seconds remaining to fall 1-0 at the hands of the University of Chicago. The loss snaps a 16-game home unbeaten streak for the Thunder dating back to October 2011. The loss also snaps a four game unbeaten streak against the University of Chicago dating back to 2006. Wheaton falls to 2-2 with the loss while the Maroons are now 3-0 on the season.
In a very defensive battle, both teams managed six shots on goal while Wheaton outshot the Maroons 9-8.Â
Derek Babb made five saves and allowed one goal. Chicago's Brett Wiesen stopped six shots while allowing no goals.
Much of the game was bogged down in a midfield battle as neither team could develop any sort of attacking rhythm. However, the second half opened the field a bit as both teams had quality chances. Wheaton's best chance to score came off a counterattack in the 83rd minute. Flying forward off a defensive corner kick, a through-ball found
Jonathan Clark streaking into space, but Clark couldn't get enough on the shot to challenge Wiesen. Wiesen had previously made several spectacular diving saves on long range chances by the Thunder.
The Maroons looked to have taken the lead midway through the second half but a goal was nullified due to an offsides call. Chicago had their best chance in the 85th minute when Babb came rushing off his line toward a free kick in the box. Attempting to one-time it past the keeper, Nic Lopez' shot deflected off Babb's leg and away.
A miscommunication in the back by the Thunder would lead to their undoing in the final minute. Off a corner kick, by Lopez, Matt Vecchitto managed a header that was saved by Babb and bounced free at the top of the eight-yard box. In a scramble to get to the ball, Babb was shielded by a Wheaton defender and Kyle Kurfirst pounded the ball into the back of the net at the 89:23 mark for the deciding tally.
Wheaton will next be in action on Friday, September 13 when they travel to Minneapolis to take on Augsburg College at 7 PM. The Thunder will complete their trip to the Twin Cities with a 4 PM Saturday matchup at Bethel University.
