Carol Stream, Ill. – The Wheaton College baseball team split a conference doubleheader with Elmhurst College on Tuesday evening at Lee Pfund Stadium. Elmhurst was a 4-3 winner in the first game and Wheaton won the nightcap 6-2. Wheaton (5-14/1-4 CCIW) will travel to North Park on Friday for a doubleheader with Vikings.
Wheaton secured the win in the second game with six runs, on 10 hits, with no errors and Elmhurst plated two runs, on six hits, with three errors. Thunder starting pitcher
Josh Arevalo (1-1) tossed a strong eight-inning outing to earn his first collegiate win. Arevalo allowed two runs, on six hits, with six strikeouts and no walks allowed.
Evan Rahn pitched one inning of work, with no hits or walks allowed.
Designated hitter Michael Kauffman was 2-for-4, with a double and two RBI. Centerfielder
Matt Krause (PICTURED LEFT) was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
Josh Kimmel was 1-for-3, with a walk, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Wheaton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Krause scored on a sacrifice fly by
Phil Tuttle. Wheaton added a second run in the bottom of the third inning as Kimmel drew a one-out walk, stole second base, advanced to third base on a single by Krause and later scored on a passed ball. Elmhurst put a run on the scoreboard in the fifth inning to cut the Thunder lead to 2-1.
The Bluejays tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the top of the sixth inning, however Wheaton regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Kimmel led off with a single to left centerfield and scored two batters later on a single through the middle of the of the infield by Tuttle to give Wheaton a 3-2 edge. Wheaton added another run in the bottom of the seventh inning as
John Johnson hit a one-out triple and scored on a RBI-single by
Matt Schappell. Kauffman hit a key two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Wheaton two insurance runs that would account for the 6-2 final score.
Elmhurst was a 4-3 winner in the first game as the Bluejays scored four runs, on nine hits, with two errors and Wheaton accounted for three runs, on eight hits, with no errors. Thunder starting pitcher
Peter Moran (0-2) took the loss in 5-2/3 innings as he allowed four runs, on six hits, with two walks and three strikeouts.
Casey Moll pitched 2/3 of an inning of relief, with no runs, on one hit, with one walk.
Scott Mancini pitched 2-2/3 innings, with no runs, on two hits and one walk.
Johnson (PICTURED RIGHT) was 3-for-4 in the game.
Justin Swider was 2-for-5, with a RBI-double. Krause was 1-for-3, with a walk, a run scored and two stolen bases.
Wheaton plated a run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The Bluejays took a 3-1 lead with three runs in the top of the third inning. Wheaton trimmed the Bluejays' lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the third inning off of a RBI-double by Swider. Wheaton tied the contest at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning as Kauffman drew a walk with the bases loaded to score the tying run. Elmhurst plated the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning to take the 4-3 lead that would become the final score.
