Wheaton, Ill.- A three minute stretch of sloppy play was all it took to bring the Wheaton men's soccer season to a disappointing end on its home pitch on Saturday night. The Kenyon College Lords (16-4-3) scored two goals in a span of three minutes to break a scoreless game in the second half. Wheaton mounted a furious rally but could not find an equalizer and Wheaton's season along with its 14-game unbeaten streak came to an end. Wheaton capped its season wtih a record of 17-4-2.
In a wide open affair, Wheaton outshot the Lords 28-12 but only had a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Wheaton owned a 7-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Derek Babb allowed two goals and made four saves while Kenyon's Sam Clougher allowed one goal while making six saves.
Neither team held much of an edge in the first half as the teams traded periods of possession dominance. Despite a 12-5 shot advantage, the match remained scoreless at halftime.
Wheaton nearly broke on the board first in the opening minutes of the second half when
Adam Blackman (PICTURED LEFT) fought through traffic to gain possession at the top of the box. Blackman's shot pounded off the crossbar though and the opportunity went by the wayside.
Following the missed opportunity, Kenyon started to control the game with possession and shooting opportunities and it looked like it would be the Lords who found the game's first goal until the game was stopped due to a severe weather threat in the area.
After a ten-minute delay, Wheaton to regain the momentum until a moment of individual brilliance broke the scoreless tie. Following a turnover along the Thunder defensive back line, Kenyon's Josh Lee let loose with a bending right foot from a sharp angle below the top of the 18-yard box that found the top shelf inside the far post to give the Lords the 1-0 lead at the 74:13 mark.
Kenyon struck again moments later when Tony Amolo was able to gain space off a long Jeremiah Barnes pass and beat the on-rushing Babb to give Kenyon a 2-0 lead.
Wheaton answered with increased pressure and minutes later was able to cut into the lead. Following a foul just outside the top of the box,
Mitchell Paur took a quick kick on the set piece and tucked the low shot inside the far post to make the score 2-1 at the 78:37 mark.
The Thunder continued pressing for an equalizer and had chances in the final minutes, but the Lords answered the call and held off the rally to advance with the 2-1 victory.
