Elmhurst, Ill.- The Wheaton women's soccer team returned to its winning ways on Friday night with a dominant 4-0 victory at Elmhurst College. With the victory, Wheaton improves to 12-0-1 on the season and 3-0 in CCIW play. Elmhurst falls to 7-5 on the year and 1-2 in conference play. Wheaton will step out of CCIW play for its next game on Tuesday when they host #18-Calvin College on Tuesday night at Joe Bean Stadium.
Wheaton pushed the action forward in the early minutes of the match, recording the first three shots on goal before striking gold on their fourth attempt on net.
Val Lelle took advantage of an assist from
Sydney Sharkey in the 14th minute for both her first goal of the season and the first goal of the match to give Wheaton a 1-0 lead.
Not settling for the one-goal advantage, the Thunder struck again in the 27th minute of the match when
Kristin Rauh worked shot around traffic in front of the net and capitalized with her second goal of the season.
Annie Wooldridge was credited with the assist.
Almost six minutes later, Lelle took advantage of a loose rebound in the box and knocked home her second goal of the night to give Wheaton a 3-0 lead which would last until halftime.
After being outshot 17-3 in the first half, Elmhurst balanced the shot total in the second half at seven apiece, but the Bluejays were unable to beat
Mary Daghfal who made three saves in registering a shutout.
In the 78th minute,
Mary Pettit capped the Wheaton performance by heading in a cross from Wooldridge (PICTURED RIGHT) past Elmhurst's Emily Gordon for her first goal of the season and Wooldridge's second assist of the night. Gordon allowed four goals and made eight saves. The goal gave Wheaton the final margin of 4-0.
Wheaton will return home on Tuesday night for their final non-conference game of the season when they host the #18-ranked Calvin College Knights at 7 PM.
