Wheaton women's soccer team tops IWU in regular season finale to secure quarterfinal hosting rights

Bloomington, Ill. -- The Thunder women's soccer team will host a CCIW Tournament quarterfinal next weekend after Wheaton used a second-half penalty kick and a resolute defensive performance to edge Illinois Wesleyan University in today's regular season finale. The Orange and Blue became the first team to blank the high-scoring Titans in conference play this fall, and senior captain Lily Lindquist dispatched the spot kick that gave Wheaton its valuable 1-0 victory. The Thunder finish the 2026 campaign with a 4-2-2 record in league play and are now assured of a top four placement in the conference standings. Illinois Wesleyan dips to 4-2-1 in CCIW action and will finish either second or fourth in the table depending on Wednesday's final round of results.

Wheaton has had to go on the road for its CCIW quarterfinal contests the last two years, but the Thunder earned the right to host a knockout match this time around thanks to the team's first true road win in Bloomington since 2018.

The central Illinois hosts registered statistical advantages across the board on Saturday, out-shooting their suburban visitors, 16-6, with a 7-4 disparity in shots on target, taking eight corner kicks to Wheaton's three, and controlling the balance of possession for 90 minutes. But seven saves from goalkeeper Lydia Martin and a determined showing by the Thunder back line frustrated the Titans and gave the guests the platform they needed to snatch all three points. Lindquist's goal was just the second penalty kick all year for Wheaton, and her one effort on frame this afternoon was matched by Liza Timm, Annika Vandervelde, and Calah Strong, who drew the spot kick that her midfield partner buried.

Illinois Wesleyan's pressure did not start right from the opening whistle, as Wheaton attempted the game's first shot and carved out an early corner kick opportunity. But the first shot on target arrived from a Titans player just shy of five minutes in and drew a diving stop from Martin. Strong and Timm's looks in front of goal came as part of the same sequence, as the former's initial try was denied by a team block before the latter saw her follow-up stopped by the IWU goalie. The Thunder would only attempt one more shot in the remainder of the first period but managed the half well defensively, limiting Wesleyan to a single effort after the 18-minute mark.

Wheaton survived an IWU attacking flurry six minutes into the second frame thanks to two more Martin stops. The decisive moment in the match then arrived on 58 minutes, as the ball was played through for Strong to chase. The sophomore beat the out-rushing goalkeeper to the ball on the left side of the box and was brought down by a late challenge that drew the referee's whistle. The veteran Lindquist (pictured left) confidently stepped up to
Lily Lindquistface the challenge and drove her penalty kick attempt to the opposition shot-stopper's left side to put Wheaton in front.

Vandervelde's chance would come in the 73rd minute on a counterattacking opportunity for the visitors. But the majority of the contest following the Thunder's goal was played in their half as IWU desperately pushed forward in search of an equalizer. Martin was called on three more times in the closing stages, including having to make an impressive leaping rejection in the 68th minute. Illinois Welseyan attempted four shots in the final five minutes and put Wheaton under serious pressure. But the visitors held firm and notched an impressive road win that came with the guarantee of at least one more game on home turf.

After concluding its regular season slate on a high note, Wheaton can now enjoy a stress-free midweek bye while the rest of the conference wraps up CCIW play on Wednesday night. The Thunder cannot finish in the top two of the league table but will also not finish lower than fourth, locking the squad into a quarterfinal matchup next Saturday. Wheaton will host either the #5 seed or the #6 seed at Joe Bean Stadium next weekend, with the kick-off time yet to be determined. Match details will be confirmed in the coming days.
