Spokane, Wash. – The Thunder women's soccer team, ranked fourth in
this week's NSCAA Division III Coaches Poll, earned a 2-1 victory against University of Puget Sound (1-2) on Saturday at the Whitworth Soccer Classic. The Thunder netted a pair of goals late in the first half, with a UPS goal between Wheaton's scores. The 'Orange and Blue' will return to action next Saturday for a 1 PM kickoff against
ninth-ranked Washington University (Mo.).
In Saturday's win against Puget Sound, junior
Leah DeMoss netted two goals for the second consecutive match. DeMoss gave the Thunder a 1-0 lead when she scored a goal on a shot from the top of the box on an
Ally Witt assist at the 37:18 mark of the match.
Puget Sound's Amalia Acorda-Fey scored on a rebound shot at the 41:52 mark of the match to tie the contest at 1-1. Two minutes later DeMoss again gave Wheaton a lead when she headed the ball into the net off of a cross from Witt for a 2-1 Wheaton lead. The two teams played a scoreless second half, despite an 8-5 edge in shots for the Loggers in the match.
Each team attempted 14 shots in the match and Puget Sound held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Thunder goalkeeper
Hilary Barreto made four saves and allowed the Loggers' first-half goal. Puget Sound netminder Casey Thayer made six stops and allowed both DeMoss goals.
