Top-ranked women's soccer team falls at UW-Eau Claire, 2-1 in overtime

The Wheaton women's soccer team had its win streak snapped at six matches on Wednesday with a 2-1 loss at UW-Eau Claire in two overtimes. Wheaton is now 6-1 on the season, while the Blugolds improve to 2-4-1 for the year.

The Thunder jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a goal by senior Laura Karsten that was assisted by Leah DeMoss just 8:48 into the contest. Wheaton held its 1-0 advantage for the remainder of the first half.

With less than four minutes remaining in the match, the Blugolds tied the match at 1-1. A goal by UW-Eau Claire's Gina Williams evened the match to send it into extra time.

The two teams played a scoreless first overtime period. Williams converted her second goal of the afternoon just 2:33 into the second overtime to give the hosts the victory. Williams scored thanks to an assists by Abby Beinlich.

UW-Eau Claire out-shot the Thunder 23-13 in the match, while Wheaton held an 11-6 edge in corner kicks.Wheaton goalkeeper Hilary Barreto made eight saves and allowed two goals. UW-Eau Claire Nina Behrenbrinker made three saves and allowed the first half goal that was scored by Karsten.

Wheaton entered today's match ranked first in this week's NSCAA Division III Coaches Poll. The Thunder will travel to Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday for 7 PM (EDT) match against the Battling Bishops.
