Carol Stream, Ill. – The Wheaton baseball team was a 12-10 winner against Concordia-Chicago in non-conference action on Tuesday at Lee Pfund Stadium. Today's win was Wheaton's sixth consecutive victory.
The Thunder baseball team is now 17-12 on the season, while Concordia-Chicago is 21-8 on the year. Wheaton will resume conference play on Friday at 5:30 PM when it travels to Augustana to begin a three-game series with the Vikings. The two teams will play a doubleheader at Lee Pfund Stadium on Saturday at noon.
Wheaton topped Concordia-Chicago 12-10 today with 12 runs, on 13 hits, committing two errors and the Cougars scored 10 runs, on 16 hits, with no errors. Thunder starting pitcher
Andrew Bayer worked the first 1-1/3 innings as he allowed three runs, on four hits, with two walks. Freshman
Casey Moll (2-1) earned the win in 3-1/3 innings of relief. He allowed five runs, including two earned runs, on eight hits, with two strikeouts. Phillip Tuttle (PICTURED RIGHT) added 2-1/3 innings of scoreless relief, with no hits, two walks and one strikeout.
Trey Martin pitched the final two innings for Wheaton, allowing two runs, on four hits, with five strikeouts and one walk.
Ryan Miller was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Thunder with a walk. He scored three times with a double and a triple. Martin was 3-for-5, with a RBI and a run scored.
John Jensen-Johnson was 2-for-4, with two RBI and a run scored on the day.
Wheaton took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with a RBI-triple by
Drew Golz and a RBI-single from Martin (PICTURED LEFT). Concordia responded with three runs in the top of the second inning to take a 3-2 lead. Each team scored on run in the third inning as the Cougars led 4-3 after three innings. Wheaton's third-inning run was the result of a RBI-single by
Justin Zeller.
Wheaton plated six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to regain the lead with a 9-4 advantage. Wheaton's big inning included RBI-singles by
Taylor Howe and Martin, along with bases loaded walks dawn by
Desmond Cato and Miller. Concordia added four runs in the top of the fifth inning to trim the Thunder lead to 9-8.
Three runs by Wheaton in the bottom of the sixth inning extended its lead to 12-8. Jensen-Johnson drove in a pair of runs with a two-run single in the sixth and Martin lined a single down the leftfield line for Wheaton's three runs in the inning. The Cougars added two runs in the top of the eighth inning to account for the 12-10 final score.
