Carol Stream, Ill. - The Wheaton baseball team topped Elmhurst 9-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Lee Pfund Stadium at Legion Field. The Thunder and Bluejays wrapped up their three-game series with today's contest. Wheaton is now 13-12 overall and 3-6 in CCIW play. Elmhurst is now 12-10 overall and 4-5 in CCIW action. The Thunder will host Millikin for a three-game series beginning Friday at 3 PM. Wheaton and the Big Blue will close out their three-game series on Saturday at noon.
Wheaton won today's game with nine runs, on 11 hits and no errors, while Elmhurst plated five runs, on 13 hits, with three errors. Thunder starting pitcher
Jimmy McDonald (1-1) earned the victory in five innings of work. McDonald allowed two runs, on seven hits, with four walks. Phillip Tuttle pitched 1-2/3 innings of relief, allowing three runs, on four hits, with two walks. Freshman
Miles Veth pitched the final 2-1/3 innings as held the Bluejays scoreless, on two hits, with one strikeout.
Wheaton junior
Trey Martin (PICTURED LEFT) was 3-for-4, with a pair of doubles as he drove in four runs and scored one run. Senior
Drew Golz was 3-for-5, with three RBI.
Ryan Miller hit a double and scored three times in the game, while
Justin Zeller drew three walks and scored three times.
Elmhurst scored one run in the top of the first inning, but the Thunder countered with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. Martin drove in a pair of runs in the first when he belted a RBI-double to leftfield and he later scored on a RBI-single by
Justin Swider. Wheaton scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to extend its lead to 6-1 as Martin drove in two more with a RBI-double and Golz drove in a run with a fielder's choice.
Wheaton added one more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as
Austin Driggers hit a RBI-single to score Zeller who drew a one-our walk. Elmhurst added a run in the top of the fifth inning to cut Wheaton's lead to 7-2. The Thunder added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Golz (PICTURED RIGHT) hit a two-run, two-out single to left field that pushed Wheaton's lead to 7-2. The Bluejays plated three runs in the top of the seventh inning, but could get no closer as Veth closed out the game for Wheaton.
