St. Louis, Mo. – The Wheaton baseball team played the first of three games scheduled for this weekend on the campus of Washington University-St. Louis on Friday afternoon. Washington defeated the Thunder 5-3. The game was called with two outs in the top of the eighth inning due to rain and poor field conditions. The Thunder had the bases loaded at the time the umpires called the game.
Wheaton (8-5) will face Wisconsin-Platteville at 9 AM on Saturday at Washington's Kelly Field and the Thunder will close out the trip at noon on Saturday with another contest against the host Bears of Wash U.
Washington won Friday's game against the Thunder 5-3, as the Bears scored five runs, on 10 hits, with one error and Wheaton scored three runs, on seven hits and one error. Sophomore pitcher
Evan Rahn (3-1) took the loss in six innings. Rahn allowed five runs, including four earned runs, on nine hits, with two strikeouts and two walks. Phillip Tuttle pitched one inning of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit. Sophomore second baseman
Justin Swider was 2-for-4, with a double. Junior
Trey Martin was also 2-for-4, with a run scored.
The Bears broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Washington added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase the hosts' lead to 4-0 and the Bears added one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Wheaton opened the top of the eighth inning with consecutive singles by
Justin Zeller and Martin, followed by a walk to
Austin Driggers to load the bases. Freshman
Alex MaLossi brought Zeller home with a sacrifice fly for Wheaton's first run. On the next at bat, Swider advanced on a Wash U error that brought Martin home as Wheaton cut the hosts' lead to 5-2. Sophomore catcher
Taylor Howe hit a RBI-single down the leftfield line to score Driggers for a 5-3 Bears' lead. Following a strikeout on the next at bat,
Ryan Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After Miller's at bat, the umpires called the game due to the conditions.
