Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder women's soccer team kept is record on the young season unblemished thanks to a 2-0 victory against University of St. Thomas (Minn.) on Saturday afternoon at Joe Bean Stadium. Wheaton, ranked sixth in Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, is now 4-0 on the season. The Thunder will travel to Aurora University for a 4 PM match against the Spartans on Monday afternoon. St. Thomas is now 1-1 in the year.
Both Thunder goals came in the first half, with the first score coming from
Keri Shannon. Shannon scored from five yards out of the net on a pass from
Ali Kopelman that originated from
Jaime Orewiler, 17:47 into the match to give Wheaton a 1-0 lead. Wheaton extended its lead to 2-0 about seven minutes later when it was Kopelman who scored off of a Shannon assist at the 24:32 mark of the match.
Wheaton out-shot the Tommies 12-2 in the first half and kept the pressure on in the second half with a 9-1 advantage in shots. Wheaton collected a 21-3 edge in shots in the match. Wheaton took nine corner kicks in the match, while St. Thomas took five.
Thunder junior
Hilary Barreto started the match in goal with one save in 45 minutes. Freshman
Kelsey Graham played the second half in net for the hosts with one save in 45 minutes of work. Callan Faulkner made four saves and allowed two goals in the net for the Tommies.
