Lisle, Ill. – The Thunder baseball team closed out its season on Saturday by splitting a doubleheader on Saturday against Elmhurst College (17-19/5-14 CCIW). The Bluejays won the opener 8-1 and the Thunder won the nightcap 6-5. Wheaton closes the season with a 17-23 overall record and an 8-13 mark in conference play.
In the 6-5 Thunder win in the finale, the Thunder scored six runs, on seven hits, with one error and Elmhurst plated five runs, on nine hits, with one error. Thunder starting pitcher
Steve Dennison (3-4), a senior in his final performance for Wheaton, earned the win in 8-2/3 innings. Dennison had a strong outing as he allowed three runs, two of them earned, on six hits, with eight strikeouts. Junior
Justin Zeller hit a pair of home runs as he was 2-for-3, with two runs scored and five RBI.
Elmhurst took a 1-0 lead in the game, scoring a run in the top of the third inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Wheaton's
Drew Golz hit a one-out triple and he scored on the next at-bat to tie the game at 1-1. Elmhurst plated an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning to regain the lead at 2-1.
Wheaton took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with three runs for a 4-2 edge. #Justin Swider led off the sixth with a single and later scored on a fielder's choice. Zeller then put the Thunder ahead with a two-run home run over the fence in right centerfield. Zeller belted another two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend the Wheaton lead to 6-2. Elmhurst scored three runs in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough as Wheaton closed out the season with the 6-5 win.
Elmhurst won the first game 8-1 as the Bluejays scored eight runs, on nine hits, with no errors and Wheaton plated one run, on five hits, with two errors. Sophomore #
Trey Martin# (4-5) took the loss for the Thunder in eight innings. Martin allowed four runs, with one earned run, on six hits, with eight strikeouts.
Drew Golz was 2-for-4, with a runs scored as he hit a double.

Pyne concludes his Wheaton career as Wheaton's all-time leader in games played (156) and putouts (1231). He is second in school history with 198 career base hits; fourth in runs scored (124) sixth in RBI (104) and sixth in fielding percentage (.987).
Dennison graduates second all-time in school history in victories (17); third in strikeouts (191); fourth in appearances (49) and eighth in innings pitched (210 IP).
