Thunder baseball team earns a 5-3 victory at Elmhurst College

Evan Rahn tossed a two-hitter, with a career-high 10 strikeouts

Elmhurst, Ill.
– The Thunder baseball team opened its season-ending series with Elmhurst College on Friday night by earning a 5-3 victory at the Bluejays' home field. Wheaton scored five runs, on eight hits, with no errors and Elmhurst plated three runs, on two hits, with one error. The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Saturday with a 1 PM doubleheader at Lisle-Benedictine Sports Complex.

Freshman starting pitcher Evan Rahn (4-4) tossed a two-hitter on the mound for the Thunder tonight in earning his fourth win of the season. Rahn allowed three runs, on two hits, with a career-high 10 strikeouts. Elmhurst's Dan Napientek (0-2) took the loss in 4-2/3 innings.

Designated hitter Austin Driggers was 2-for-4 on the night, with a double as he drove in two runs and scored once. Sophomore Trey Martin was 2-for-4, with a double as he had a RBI. Junior Ryan Miller scored twice as he was 2-for-5, with a triple.

Drew Golz and Justin Zeller each drew two-out walks in the top of the first inning and then scored on a double to left centerfield by Driggers to give the Thunder an early 2-0 advantage. Elmhurst scratched out a run on one hit in the bottom of the third inning to cut the guests' lead to 2-1. Following the bunt single in that inning, Rahn did not allow another Elmhurst hit until the eighth inning.

In the top of the fourth inning Driggers hit a one-out single and he scored on the next at-bat thanks to a RBI-double by Martin to give the Thunder a 3-1 edge. Wheaton increased its lead to 4-1 in the top of the seventh inning as Miller hit a one-out single, then stole a pair of bases and was able to score on a Bluejay throwing error.

A two-run home run for Elmhurst in the bottom of the eighth inning snapped the hitting drought for the Bluejays to cut the Thunder advantage to 4-3. Wheaton scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning as Miller hit a leadoff triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Danny Pyne on the next at bat to give the Thunder a 5-3 edge that would become the final score.
