Naperville, Ill. - Both pitchers went the distance as the Wheaton College baseball team lost 4-2 at North Central College on Thursday.
The Thunder fall to 12-18 overall, 4-9 in the CCIW. The Cardinals improve to 15-7 and 9-3 in conference.
The visitors got out in front early.
Ryan Miller led off the game with a single and scored on an RBI single from
Drew Golz. Golz then reached home on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0 Wheaton. But from then on, North Central starting pitcher Nate Arenson settled down and did not allow any more runs the rest of the way.
The Cardinals took advantage of their oppportunities early on, using an RBI double in the first inning and an RBI triple in the second inning to take a 3-2 lead. North Central closed out their scoring in the fifth with a run-scoring single.
Wheaton's starting pitcher
Trey Martin (4-3) dueled with Arenson the whole way but took the loss on the mound. Martin threw eight innings, allowing eight hits, four runs and four walks with two strikeouts. Arenson (3-1) tossed all nine innings, surrendering two runs on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Miller led the offense from the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4. Martin went 2-for-3 at the plate with Golz producing the lone Thunder RBI.
Wheaton continues its three-game series at North Central with a 12 PM doubleheader on Saturday.
