Wheaton drops a pair at #14-Carthage

Kenosha, Wis. - The Wheaton College baseball team dropped a doubleheader at No. 14-ranked Carthage College 20-10 and 10-2 on Wednesday.

The Thunder fall to 9-16 overall and 1-8 in the CCIW. The Red Men improve to 16-4, 8-1 in conference.

In game one, the Thunder struck first, taking advantage of three walks in the opening frame before Trey Martin blasted a grand-slam homer to make it 4-0.

But it didn't take long for Carthage to turn on its offense. The Red men ended up scoring at least one run in every single inning, including three runs in the first and four runs in the third and five runs in the fifth. The hosts ended up hitting seven home runs in the game.

With the Red Men leading 15-4, the sixth inning got wild. Wheaton scored five runs on two hits thanks to three hit-by-pitches, a wild pitch, a balk, an error and a bases-loaded walk. Drew Golz's RBI single in the sixth got the Thunder into double-digit runs. However, Kyle Pusateri's two-run homer in the seventh enacted the 10-run rule, giving Carthage the 20-10 victory.

Starting pitcher Steve Dennison (1-4) went four innings, allowing 10 hits and six earned runs with five strikeouts. Relievers Andrew Bayer and Jonathan Burdett each threw one inning.

Wheaton finished with seven hits, with two hits each coming from Austin Driggers and Brian Whatnaby. Martin led the way with five RBI. The Thunder also committed five errors that led to five unearned runs.

Carthage led the whole way in game two, jumping out early with a three runs in the first inning and two more in the second inning. Wheaton's scores came via Steven Harrison with a solo homer in the sixth inning and Danny Pyne with an RBI groundout in the seventh inning.

Phillip Tuttle (1-1) took the loss on the mound in six innings of work. He surrendered 12 hits, seven earned runs and two walks to go with four strikeouts. Luke Ross and Jimmy McDonald came in to throw the seventh and eighth innings.

Wheaton's offense put together eight hits, including Harrison's first career home run.

The Thunder will kick off a three-game series at Millikin University on Friday starting at 2 PM.
