Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton men's basketball team,
ranked 25th by D3hoops.com, earned an 81-44 victory against Beloit College on Friday night to wrap up the first day of action at the Lee Pfund Classic.
Wheaton jumped out to a 17-4 lead against the Buccaneers and never trailed in tonight's game. The largest lead of the game for the Thunder was a 39-point bulge late in the second half.
All-American forward
Tim McCrary led the Thunder with 19 points, six rebounds and six assists. Sophomore
Tyler Peters scored 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the field.
Aaron Garriott and
Spencer Schultze each scored 10 points, while Schultze added a game-high seven rebounds. Guards
Jeremy Pflederer and
Nate Serenius each scored eight points. And freshman
Caleb DeMoss added four assists.
Wheaton shot 60% (33-for-55) from the field, with 33.3% (4-of-12) from three-point ranged and 57.9% (11-of-19) at the free throw line. Beloit recorded a 29.6% (16-for-54) field goal percentage, with 11.1% (2-for-18) from three-point range and 52.6% (10-for-19) at the charity stripe. The Thunder owned a 44-23 edge in rebounding, with a 10-7 advantage in the offensive boards.
Wheaton improves to 2-0 and will host Wilmington College in the tournament's championship game at 8 PM on Saturday. Wilmington defeated Buena Vista College, 75-71
(BOXSCORE) in overtime on Friday to advance to face Wheaton. Buena Vista and Beloit will play in the consolation game on Saturday at 5:30 PM.
