Elmhurst, Ill. – The fourth-ranked Thunder women's soccer team lost a 2-1 decision in two overtimes at Elmhurst College on Saturday night. Tonight's decision was the first loss of the year for the Thunder. Wheaton led 1-0 for the majority of the match. However, Elmhurst tied the match at 1-1 with a goal in the final three minutes of regulation and the Bluejays scored the game-winner early in the second overtime.
Defender Laura Karsten gave the Thunder a 1-0 lead with her fourth goal of the season at the 28:01 mark of the match. Karsten headed the ball into the back of the net off of a
Katelyn Kishkunas assist. Wheaton retained its 1-0 lead for the rest of the first half and the majority of the second half.
Elmhurst tied the match at 1-1 with an Amy Baschen goal that was assisted by Valerie Wesley with just 2:06 left in regulation. The two teams played through a scoreless first overtime period. Elmhurst scored the game-winner just 1:44 into the second overtime period to secure the upset victory over the fourth-ranked Thunder.
Wheaton is now 15-1-1 on the season and 4-1-0 in CCIW play. The Thunder will host Illinois Wesleyan for Wheaton's “Senior Night” on Tuesday at 7 PM at Joe Bean Stadium. Elmhurst is now 11-3-1 on the year and 2-2-1 in CCIW play.
