Oshkosh, Wis. - The Wheaton College men's soccer team held firm defensively and knocked off nationally-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh 1-0 on Saturday.
The Thunder improved to 5-5-1. The No. 12-ranked Titans fell to 5-3-2.
Wisconsin-Oshkosh was on the offensive in the first half, gaining a 10-4 shot advantage. But neither side could get on the scoreboard and were knotted at zeros going into halftime.
In the 53rd minute, Wheaton senior forward
Drew Golz (PICTURED ABOVE) scored his fifth goal of the season from eight-yards out off an assist from freshman
Adam Blackman.
From there, the Thunder's defense turned back late scoring opportunities and secured the shutout victory. Goalie
Ryan Seager recorded three saves for his third shutout of the year. James Pike also tallied three saves in a losing effort for the Titans.
Wisconsin-Oshkosh ended up with a 13-7 advantage in shots and a 4-2 margin in corner kicks.
"We needed a signature win to remind us of what we are capable of doing in the final month of the season," Wheaton head coach Mike Giuliano said. "This was that signature win. Oshkosh is an excellent team that gave us everything we could handle. The boys played hard for 90 minutes and we improved as the game went along. I hope this starts a new phase of consistency as we get ready for conference."
The Thunder are back in action on Tuesday with a 7 PM home game against Aurora University.
