Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton College women's soccer team, ranked
12th in the Division III Preseason Poll, opened its 2010 season on Thursday with a 2-1 victory against Whitworth University in the first match of the 2010 Bob Baptista Invitational. The tournament will continued on Friday at 11:30 AM when Whitworth (0-1) face University of Dubuque (1-0) and it ends on Saturday at 4:30 PM when Wheaton (1-0) entertains Dubuque.
Wheaton reached the scoreboard first when junior forward
Ali Kopelman artfully placed the ball into the back of the net off of a
Keri Shannon assist, 17:47 into the match. A Whitworth player was fouled inside the penalty box at 35:39 into the match to bring on a penalty kick. Sarah Berentson of the Pirates converted on the penalty kick opportunity to tie the match at 1-1. The score remained 1-1 for the rest of the first half.
Wheaton was fouled in the penalty box at 66:00 minutes to set up penalty kick of the hosts. Thunder junior
Katelyn Kishkunas booted the ball into the back of the net with a straight-on shot that gave the hosts a 2-1 edge that the Thunder would maintain for the rest of the match.
The Thunder out-shot Whitworth 25-14 on the night, with 8-5 edge in shots on goal for the hosts and Wheaton held a 10-1 edge in corner kicks. Wheaton's sophomore goalkeeper,
Hilary Barreto made four saves on the night. Whitworth netminder Callie Bergstrom made six saves.
