Elmhurst, Ill. - The Wheaton College baseball team set a new record for victories in a season with a season-ending doubleheader split at Elmhurst College on Saturday. Elmhurst won the first game 12-10 and Wheaton won the second game 10-8.
The Thunder finish with a 24-16 overall record and 10-11 in the CCIW. The victory sets a new school record for wins in a season for the baseball program after achieving 23 wins the past two seasons.
The Bluejays are now 9-30 overall and 4-17 in conference.
In game one, host Elmhurst burst out of the gate right away with four runs in the first inning and held a 6-1 lead by the fourth inning. Wheaton then rebounded with five runs in the fifth inning to tie the score at 6-6.
Brian Kolb knocked an RBI double,
Justin Zeller had an RBI sacrifice fly,
Trey Martin knocked in a run with a bases-loaded hit by pitch and
Austin Driggers capped the inning with a two-run single.
The Bluejays added three runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth to build a 12-6 cushion.
However, Wheaton started to rally in the ninth inning to keep things interesting. An RBI single by

Trey Martin hit an RBI double and Driggers added a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 12-10. But that was as close as the visitors would get as Elmhurst got the final out with one runner on to end it.
Mark Price led Wheaton with three hits while
Charlie Antal, Martin and Driggers all had two hits each.
John Pohl took the loss in relief, allowing five runs in two innings of work.
Cody Boals got the win in 8 1/3 innings, with 12 hits allowed, 10 runs, seven walks and 10 strikeouts.
A three-run third inning staked the Thunder to the lead in game two, as Zeller cranked a two-run homer and Pyne hit an RBI single.
The eighth inning was action filled as each squad scored four runs in the frame. Kolb started the fireworks with an RBI double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Price. Pyne's RBI double and Martin's RBI single gave Wheaton enough to secure the victory.
Kolb and Pyne both went 3-for-4 with two RBI each. Zeller, Golz and Martin all tallied two hits.
Steve Dennison (7-3) earned the decision in 7 2/3 innings of work.
John Little picked up his second save of the weekend, which gives him the all-time Wheaton career record with six.
Brian Marquis took the loss, throwing five innings with six runs allowed.
