Aurora, Ill. – The Thunder baseball team out-slugged Aurora University on Monday night to earn a 23-20 victory at Aurora's Solfisburg Park. Wheaton scored 23 runs, on 25 hits, with one error and Aurora scored 20 runs, on 24 hits, with five errors. Wheaton never trailed in tonight's game. Wheaton is now 22-15 on the year and Aurora is 22-14.
Wheaton scored five runs in the top of the first inning and Aurora countered with four runs in the bottom of the inning for a 5-4 Thunder lead after one inning. Neither team scored in the second inning; however Wheaton made up for that with 12 runs in the top of the third inning to take a 17-4 lead. Wheaton centerfielder
Justin Zeller had two impressive at bats in the inning, with a three-run triple in his first at bat. His second at bat of the inning was a grand slam to right centerfield, as the sophomore drove in seven of Wheaton's 12 runs in the inning.
The Spartans scored twice in the third inning and six more times in the fourth inning to cut Wheaton's lead to 17-12. The Spartans scored three more runs over the next two innings to cut Wheaton's lead to 17-15 after six innings of action. The Thunder scored six more runs over the final three innings to earn the 23-20 win.
Sophomore leftfielder
Drew Golz was 5-for-6 on the night, with a home run. He scored four runs and drove in three in the game. Freshman
Trey Martin was 4-for-7, with three RBI and two runs scored. Junior
Charlie Antal hit a home run in the game, with a 3-for-5 night with three runs scored and three RBI.
Danny Pyne also had a three-hit night for the guests.
Wheaton will close out its season this weekend with a three-game series against Elmhurst. The Thunder will host the Blue Jays on Friday night at 7 PM at Alexian Field in Schaumburg. The series will conclude on Saturday with a noon doubleheader at Elmhurst's Butterfield Park.
