Baseball splits a doubleheader with Millikin

- The Wheaton baseball team split a CCIW doubleheader with Millikin University on Friday afternoon at Alexian Field in Schaumburg. The Thunder won the opener 15-5 in seven innings and Millikin took the nightcap 6-3. The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Saturday at 12 PM in a game that will be played at Legion Field in Carol Stream, Illinois near the intersection of Geneva Road and Gary Avenue. (PLEASE NOTE THE LOCATION OF SATURDAY'S GAME).

Wheaton is now 17-5 on the year, with a 4-2 record in CCIW play. Millikin is 4-17 on the season, with a 1-6 mark in conference action.

Wheaton won the opener, 15-5, as the Thunder scored 15 runs, on 16 hits, with two errors and Millikin scored five runs, on 11 hits, with seven errors. Junior starting pitcher Steve Dennison earned the victory in the seven innings to improve to 5-1 on the year. The southpaw allowed five runs, two of them earned, on 11 hits, with four strikeouts and two walks.

Thunder sophomore Drew Golz was 3-for-5, with a double as he scored three runs scored and a RBI. Shortstop Brian Kolb was 3-for-6, with two doubles and three runs driven in. Sophomore Justin Zeller was 2-for-3, with a run scored. Catcher Brian Whartnaby was 2-for-3, with three runs scored and a RBI. Trey Martin drove in three runs in the game, collecting two hits.

Millikin scored one run in the top of the first inning, but Wheaton countered with four runs in the bottom of the first. Martin hit a two-run single in the inning and Golz added a RBI-single. Wheaton increased its lead to 8-1 with four more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Kolb hit a two-run double, while Charlie Antal drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Ryan Miller drove in a run with a single.

Millikin plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning to cut Wheaton's lead to 8-3, but Wheaton answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to increase its lead to 12-3. A RBI-double by Whartnaby highlighted the inning for the hosts. Each team scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning for a 14-5 Wheaton advantage. Kolb hit a run scoring single through the left side of the infield in the bottom of the seventh inning to drive in Whartnaby and end the game on the 10-run rule at 15-5.

Millikin won the nightcap 6-3 as the Big Blue scored six runs, on nine hits, with no errors and Wheaton plated three runs, on six hits, with two errors. Wheaton starting pitcher John Little (1-2) took the loss in seven innings as he allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on eight hits, with three strikeouts and two walks. John Pohl pitched one inning of scoreless and hitless relief as he struck out two batters. Zach Fallon allowed one run, in one inning of work. Miller was 2-for-4 in the game, with a pair of doubles as he scored two runs for the hosts. Zeller drove in a pair of runs for Wheaton in the contest.

Each team scored a run in the first inning. Wheaton's first inning run was the result of a leadoff double by Miller who scored two batters later on a ground out by Zeller. Millikin scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead for good with a 4-1 edge for the guests. Millikin increased its lead to 5-1 with a run in the top of the eighth inning. Wheaton cut Millikin's lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning as Zeller hit a RBI-single and Kolb drove in a run on a groundout. Wheaton could not get any closer and Millikin added a run in the top of the ninth inning to secure the 6-3 victory.
